The Romantic period is generally accepted as a new flow where the individual's emotions had gained more weight than foundation, general truths and long rules and norms. As an era, romance is particularly relevant in art, science, literary history, and history of philosophy.
A new genre that arose during the Romantic period was the Gothic fiction which is still regarded as a siginificant innovation to the literature world. Mary Shelley was one of the authors who introduced the new genre with her globally known novel, Frankstein which is still going strong today. Another noteworthy writer is Edgar Allan Poe.
