Moroni was one of the greatest Nephites to have ever lived.
He was only 25 when he was appointed Chief Captain over the Nephite armies, and it is not long after that he is described as one of the most righteous men. Mormon even declares that if everyone was like Moroni the devil would loose all power on the Earth.
One thing that truly marks Moroni as a great leader is that the Nephites are described as having the happiest life during his time than any other time since the days of Nephi, the son of Lehi.

Moroni was a very clever man as well, and he was the one that first began to build actual fortifications and strongholds among the Nephites. He also seems to be the one to improve the quality of their armor.
He led the armies to clear the wilderness of Lamanites who had been a scourge to the Nephites. This confined the Lamanites to the Land of Nephi, south of Zerahemla.
He lead the armies in the lengthy war against Amalekiah, and it was Moroni who wrote and lifted the Title of Liberty over all the cities of the Nephites.

While he was only the Chief Captain, the Chief Judge Nephihah, and later Pahoran, seem to have trusted him with great political power. He was also given license to deal with rebels in a kind of military court, thus making him a judge as well.

While he mainly fought the Lamanites, he did lead the Freemen against the Kingmen, and he was in command during the Morianton rebellion.

He seems to have died very young. He was not made Chief Captain until after Zoram, and so no sooner than the year 79, as Zoram was still Chief Captain in 80. However, it is much more likely that he was not made Chief Captain until the time that he is first mentioned in the record, which would be the year 73.
He was 25 when he was appointed Chief Captain, and so could not have been born any earlier than 103, but no later than 97. But we know that he died in 56.
I list his birth in 99, so he became Chief Captain in 73. He died in 56, at the age of 43.

I believe his young death came as a result of complications from a wound he suffered in the wars he fought (the wound is mentioned in the record).
