Tobacco (1600's):
Tobacco was one of the first extremely successful cash-crops in the United States. It caused an influx of wealth that allowed for populations to boom. Tobacco plantations became majorly prevalent after John Rolfe used cross breeding to make a “better” product. The crop was now insanely profitable and with the chance of profit came many new settlers who grew the crop anywhere it could grow. Farmers took the plant and moved west, planting all along the way. The population in Virginia alone grew from less than one hundred in 1610 to over thirty-five thousand 60 years later. Tobacco quickly became a staple in the United States and played a large part in expansion.
