In the time that the rest of the world had been innovating, Japan had its borders closed to the rest of the world. After bad experiences with Western civilization in the 1600s, Japan didn't trust any Western ideas (or trade), and the penalty for a Western citizen to set foot on Japanese land was death. This all changed when Commodore Matthew Perry came to Japan with steam-powered warships, demanding that Japan trade with him. This new form of warship terrified Japan into agreeing to unfavorable conditions, and through trade they realized how far ahead the rest of the world was. Eventually, Japan became more like Western civilization, from clothes and fuel to automobiles and government.
