The Meiji Restoration was a change in the way that the people of Japan lived their lives. After the ruling party demonstrated it's inability to protect the Japanese from the more modern threats of western military they switched how the nation was run. The switch was away from the Tokugawa Bakufu, the rulers of Japan for over a hundred years back to an emperor again. Meiji modernized Japan and opened their ports which had been closed by the Bakufu. Meiji permitted trade with other nations so that Japan could finally Industrialize and become a world power itself.
