Meiji Restoration (Japanese Industrialization) (1 ene 1868 año – 1 ene 1878 año)

Descripción:

The Meiji Restoration started in 1868 when a group of samurai overthrew the military government of the shogun in order to modernize and industrialize Japan. In 1853, Matthew Perry from the US entered the Tokyo harbor with military ships to force Japan to end their age of isolation and open trade with the US. Japan's government had been centralized around Japan and run by the shoguns from the Tokugawa family until this time, so Japan had no army to defend themselves and agreed to Perry's terms. Ultimately when Japan opened trade, it showed how weak Japan was and sparked the Meiji Restoration with the overthrown shogun. The effects of the Meiji Restoration were greatly inspired by the US and European countries such as the creation of a new constitution with two houses (Diet), a modernized military force, new factories, and the growth of railroads. The Meiji Restoration also included a program of "Civilization and Enlightenment" which promoted Western practices. Eventually, Japan renewed their appreciation of traditional values, but their industrialized society had a mix of influence.
