At the end of the civil war, Lucius Septimius Severus emerged victorious. During the third century, a total of 22 emperors took the throne, and most of them died at the hands of the ones that put them in power. This caused Rome to be in an almost constant of conflict. Meanwhile, threats from outside the empire caused the empire to lose its riches. This was because of aggression from the Germans and the Parthians, and roads by the Goths.
