Crusades (21 jun 1000 año – 21 jun 1200 año)

Descripción:

Crusades’ purpose was to reconquer Jerusalem that was taken by Muslims.

Pope wanted to increase the wealth of the Catholic Church because when people go for a holy war, they would trust the Church with their property. (if they don’t come back, all the property is the Church’s)

Church believed that diverting the European kings’ attention to the Holy War would bring peace inside Europe.

First crusades - 1096~ 1099. Crusades easily conquered Syria and Jerusalem. European Kings established the Jerusalem Kingdom.

The most famous crusades - the third crusade. The strongest kings of Europe participated in taking back Jerusalem from Saladin, the ruler of Islamic Egypt. Europe’s leader was Richard the Lionheart from England. In 1192, after 3 years of fight, both Saladin and Richard I got sick, Richard I was overthrown by his brother, John.

Christians and Muslims signed a peace treaty, but Europeans failed to take back Jerusalem from Muslims.
