~After the French Revolution, France changed from a monarchy to a democracy.
~Dressing like royalty and upper classes was frowned on throughout Europe.
~The rise of the middle class meant that many people could afford to buy new clothes more often.
~Men’s fashions included the cutaway jacket, men began wearing trousers, vest, and coats all of the same color.
~Women’s fashions featured a raised waistline inspired by Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon. This style is known as empire.
~Gradually dresses became fuller and would feature a bustle that would give fullness to the back of the garment. Tightly laced corsets were essential.
~Dresses had high necklines and long sleeves
~Young women that worked in factories and offices began to wear simple skirts and tailored white blouses
