During the 18th century, childhood education became more prevalent throughout Europe. Because of this, literacy rates rose as well as other school-related knowledge. The need to be literate was becoming increasingly more important in society. People were no longer working alongside their family members, but with a mentor. To perfect one's literacy was a gateway to perfecting one's apprenticeship.
