The mysterious sinking of the Battleship Maine causes the US to go to war against Spain to help Cuba gain independence from Spain. The conflict, called the Spanish-American War, ends with decisive naval victories for the US. As a result, the US gains ownership of the former Spanish colonies of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.
