The Charlottetown Conference and the Quebec Conference (1 sept 1864 año – 27 oct 1864 año)

Descripción:

The Charlottetown Conference was a set of meetings that occured in Charlottetown that discussed the union of the different British territories in Eastern Canada. These meetings happened for just over a week, from September 1st to 9th, 1864. (Belshaw, p. 550) It was where the many delegates of Canada East, Canada West, Prince Edward island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick met to discuss coming together to form a federal union. At first, they agreed on a confederate, and sent it to the British Crown. (Belshaw, p. 550) The Quebec Conference, another set of meetings that happened this time from October 10th to the 27th, 1864, they met and created the more intricate agreements. (Belshaw, p. 551) In this conference, they drafted the Seventy-Two Resolutions, which was a list of agreements over central administration, agriculture, fisheries, criminal law, post offices, and immigration. (Belshaw, p. 551) In this, they also decreed that the British Colonies would become Provinces of Canada, and that one central government would hold power over peace, order, and good government of the country; while the provinces would have power education, healthcare, and natural resources. (Belshaw, p. 551) It wrote up that the government would have a House of Commons, which was an elected assembly, and a Senate, which was an appointed assembly. (Belshaw, p. 551) Both of these Conferences were important to Canadian history, because they created what Canada has become today. It was where the laws, rules, and contracts of what it meant to be Canadian were written and shaped this country into its own nation. It was also the end of an era of European rule over the continent of North America, as Canada was becoming its own nation, rather than an underling of the British Empire. It was also a chapter in the view on North America, as the Indigenous peoples were completely cut-out of the legislation for land rights and uses by this government. They were not even delegated with or considered during these meetings, and it shows with the way the provinces would be governed and the way the Indigenous people would be treated in the near future.
