The Great Peace of Montreal (4 agos 1704 año – 5 agos 1704 año)
Descripción:
The Great Peace of Montreal was a peace treaty that was signed between the leaders of New France, and a multitude of Indigenous and First Nations groups in North America, around the St. Lawrence and Great Lakes region. Beforehand, many of the First Nations groups in the area held many shifting and short-lived alliances with each other, and didn’t fully commit to working with the other tribes. (Watson, Treaties and Treaty People, slide 17) This was a large problem for the French, as the Indigenous people who converted to their religion continued to live in areas with a majority Indigenous populations. These places were known as ‘les domiciliés’. (Watson, Treaties and Treaty People, slide 19) The French really wanted to gain proper control over the region, and not have all these different tribes running different areas, and choosing where they could and could not fish, hunt or reside. The French continued to expand North instead, so they would not be confront both Indigenous traders, and British posts. Soon enough, the French realized that they needed to begin taking more and more land to make more and more money, and thus created more Forts and signed the Treaty of Ryswick. (Watson, Treaties and Treaty People, slide 20) It was not until August of 1701, that 1,300 delegates from 39 First Nations met in Montreal to sign a treaty with the French to both secure future alliances, and to stop the small skirmishes and infighting between the tribes. It was also to facilitate trade, and generate even more trade in between the tribes. (Watson, Treaties and Treaty People, slide 21-22) I believe that the original signing of this treaty between the French and the First Nations is an important part of Canadian history because it was one of the first important treaties that both created an economy for both sides, and showed that the European settlers could work together very well with the First Nations peoples. I believe it is also important because it was the beginning of a prosperous and long alliance between the French and the First Nations.
