A war fought between the United States and Great Britain. Due to perceived unfair taxation and several conflicts with British soldiers in Massachusetts, the American colonists declared war on Great Britain and a year later declared independence. The American troops led by General Washington spent most of the war losing, but won a few key battles and get the French and Spanish to join them. The last major battle was fought at Yorktown in 1781, with American victory being secured in 1783. It was the first war fought by the US and the sixth deadliest in the country's history.
