During April 9, 1865, the Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union General Ulysses S. Grant. General Lee was forced to retreat during the Appomattox Campaign and was cut-off by General Philip Sheridan who forced Lee’s army to stop their retreat and take in 6,000 Confederate prisoners. On April 8, there were many desertions within Lee’s army and they were surrounded, the only course of action that Lee could have taken was to surrender, in which he did. He sent a message to General Ulysses S. Grant saying that he would be willing to surrender under Grant’s terms. So, they both met at the parlour of the Wilmer McLean home and settled their terms and the war was over.
