Sherman’s march to the sea - Nov 15, 1864 – Dec 21, 1864 (15 nov 1863 año – 1 mayo 1864 año)

Descripción:

The purpose of Sherman’s march to the sea was to scare the people of Georgia, with 60,000 of his men, into giving up the Confederate cause. On September 2, 1864, General Sherman captured Atlanta which was a central hub for munitions, pride and strength for the Confederates. However, once Atlanta was captured, many of the devout Confederates felt as if they would not be able to win the war, which is what General Sherman wanted. After Sherman took Atlanta, the Confederate army took off to Tennessee and Alabama, however, Sherman split his army with 60,000 to Nashville and 62,000 to Georgia. Sherman then pillaged the way to Savannah, Georgia and when he had arrived there, there was no defence from the Confederate army, which had fled.
