After Lee’s major win at the Battle of Chancellorsville, he was confident in taking another victory. So, he led his army into the northern territory and began in what was called the Gettysburg Campaign. Since most of the fighting was done in Virginia, Lee wanted to take the fight to the north and wanted the peace movement in the north to strengthen. However, Lee’s army was being pursued by Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker, but three days later, Hooker was relieved of command and Maj. Gen. George Gordon Meade took lead. The first battle occurred north and west of Gettysburg and the 30,000 Confederates beat the 20,000 Federals. During the second day of battle, the Union managed to hold the left and right flanks which included Devil’s Den, Little Round Top, the Wheatfield, the Peach Orchard and Cemetery Ridge. In addition, on the right side was Culp's Hill and East Cemetery Hill. The third day was believed to be the most brutal when Lee sent an infantry assault of 12,000 men against the center of the Union line, which was located on Cemetery Ridge. The Union was able to suppress this charge however, a total of 51,000 from both armies were either killed, captured, or wounded.
