Alchemists were the first to do hands on experiments.

Alchemist's main purpose was to figure out how to change base metal like tin and lead into valuable metals like gold. throughout their research they discovered other elements and many new facts about existing materials.

One of their beliefs was that they would find something to give them eternal life.

Secondly they believed that they could produce a solvent that could dissolve all substances.

A major problem that they had was trying to figure out how to create gold from urine. They had tried many times using different methods, the one was to heat the urine to reveal gold but instead they discovered the element of Phosphorus.
