The Kievan Empire united the Slavic people of Eastern Europe into one kingdom. In 980, Vladimir I became the grand price of Kievan Russia, and soon after Orthodox Christianity was adopted. The empire halted the eastward expansion of Latin Christianity, further dividing the two sects. Trade flourished, especially with the Byzantine empire, and the empire reached its peak soon before its invasion by the Mongols in 1237.
