U.S. House of Representatives' Gag Rule on Abolition (1836) (1 nov 1836 año – 25 sept 1844 año)

Descripción:

"Faced with a deluge of abolitionist petitions, the U.S. House of Representatives adopts a 'gag rule' by which abolitionist issues are automatically tabled.

Supporters of the gag rule argued that the drafters of the Constitution had intended that the subject of slavery should never be discussed or debated in Congress. The tireless work of former President John Quincy Adams, arguing the Constitutional right of citizens to petition their government, led to the overturn of the rule."
