René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle was a French explorer who traveled from the Great Lakes down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. He claimed all of the Mississippi River for France He also was the first French explorer to explore Texas. Years later he came back to form a colony at the mouth of the Missipi River but missed it by about 400 miles and landed near Galveston. He set up a colony and named it Ft. Saint Louis. Ft. Saint Louis ended up not being very successful.
