Buddhism & Shinto in Japan (Shinbutsu-Shūgō) (1 ene 501 año – 1 ene 1868 año)

Descripción:

When Buddhism reached Japan (6th c. onward), it fused with Shinto by teaching that kami were local appearances of Buddhas and bodhisattvas (honji suijaku), so figures like Hachiman could be worshiped both as a Shinto war god and a Buddhist bodhisattva, and shrine–temple complexes displayed kami emblems beside Buddhist statues and sutras. [11] This meant key objects of power—shrines, icons, festivals—served both traditions at once, letting Buddhism sink deep roots into Japanese life while Shinto gained the prestige and protection of Buddhist cosmology. In 1868, however, Meiji leaders enforced shinbutsu bunri, legally tearing apart shared buildings and images to declare Shinto the “pure” national faith and mark Buddhism as foreign. [13] The same blended sacred spaces that once united kami and Buddhas were reclassified or destroyed, showing how state power can use or break syncretism to redraw religious identity and authority.
