The Homestead Act was officially repealed for the lower 48 states in 1976 by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, although the Taylor Grazing Act of 1934 had effectively ended most homesteading years earlier by regulating public land use. Homesteading remained a viable option in Alaska for another decade, with the last claim being granted in 1986.
