Berber/Muslim Conquest of the Iberian Peninsula (9 ene 711 año – 1 ene 756 año)

Descripción:

The Muslim Conquest of the Iberian Peninsula began in spring 711, where Musa ibn Nusayr, the Arab governor of the northwest Africa, conquered Spain with the help of commander Tariq ibn Ziyad.

Musa was then recalled back to Damascus by the Umayyad caliph, leaving the conquered lands with his son, Abd al-Aziz, who in three years, extended his control over most of the Iberian Peninsula, which came to be known as al-Andalus.

However, power switched from Umayyad to the Abbasid caliphate, and the first caliph, Abu'l- Abbas al-Saffah, slaughtered all members of the Umayyad caliphate, except for one, the young prince Abd al-Rahman.

He then escaped to northwest Africa, and then eventually to Spain, where, in 756, he established himself in Córdoba, which was the beginning of the Umayyad dynasy in Spain.
