Chinese Cultural Revolution (1 feb 1966 año – 1 agos 1977 año)

Descripción:

The Cultural Revolution was a political movement in China that lasted from 1966 to 1977. It was started by Mao Zedong, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, to try to regain control of the government and bring back what he saw as “true” communist values. He believed that China’s leaders were becoming too focused on money, power, and traditions, and that the revolution was being forgotten. Mao called on young people to rise up and help him fight against “capitalist” ideas and people he said were against the revolution. Millions of students formed groups called Red Guards and attacked teachers, government officials, and anyone accused of being “anti-revolutionary.” Schools shut down, books were burned, and many historical and cultural sites were destroyed. This was a really powerful act because, by choosing to focus on empowering young people, Mao focused on leaving behind a legacy and influencing the successors of China, leaving behind much longer lasting beliefs than if he had just focused on the older generations. The Cultural Revolution caused a lot of chaos and suffering. People were publicly humiliated, sent to prison or labor camps, and even killed. The economy and education system were badly damaged, and trust in the government dropped. Important figures include Mao Zedong, who led the movement, and people like Deng Xiaoping, who was removed from power during the revolution but later became China’s leader after Mao’s death. The Cultural Revolution officially ended in 1976 when Mao died, but it has a lasting impact.
