Following the 9/11 attacks, the US invades Afghanistan to rid it of the Taliban, kill Osama bin Laden, and repel threats of terrorism around the globe. This begins a nearly 20-year-long conflict resulting in nearly 250,000 deaths and, ultimately, a Taliban victory with the withdrawal of US troops in 2021.
