The initial landings were relatively unopposed, but the Japanese soon launched counterattacks, leading to fierce fighting on land and at sea. The campaign resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, with the Japanese suffering over 19,000 killed and the Americans experiencing 7,100 dead and almost 8,000 wounded.
