On August 14, 1945, Japan accepted the terms of the Potsdam Declaration and agreed to surrender, effectively ending World War II. The formal surrender ceremony took place on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. VJ Day was a time of widespread celebration and joy as people rejoiced at the end of the war.
