Space Race (29 jul 1955 año – 20 jul 1969 año)

Descripción:

The Space Race began when the Soviets launched the world’s first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, in October 1957. The US felt intense fear and anxiety that the Soviet Union had surpassed the technological achievements of the United States. In response the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was created in 1958 for civilian aerospace research. The Advanced Research Projects Agency, which took the lead in developing space technology for military purposes, was also created in 1958. NASA wanted to launch a manned vehicle into Earth’s orbit as soon as possible. The Soviets won the race in April 1961 when Yuri Gagarin became the first man to enter Earth’s orbit, in Vostok I. A month later, Alan Shepard became the first American in space, piloting a 15-minute suborbital flight. In February 1962, John Glenn became the first American to enter Earth’s orbit. Due to the Soviet’s successes in the space the Apollo program inaugurated by Kennedy pledging to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade.
