Muhammed Ali Jinnah, the head of the Muslim League, demanded division of India into two sovereign nations. This is known as the two nation theory. At the Lahore session of the League in 1940, Jinnah argued the differences between Hindus and Muslims were to great for them to live together peacefully. They named this muslim nation Pakistan.
