NIH Director, started the Human Genome Project; mapping the human genome. He gathered many scientists who had done previous work in DNA. The project’s goal was to use their findings to conduct studies on heredity and infectious disease. Wyngaarden appointed James Watson (one of the co-‘discoverers’ of the structure of DNA) to be the first director of the project in 1989.
