The Prussian prince had claim to the Spanish throne and the French saw this as a threat to their powerful presence in Europe. The Ems Telegram escalated the tension because the telegram was "misinterpretation" and claimed the French were an untrustworthy people. France became angry with Germany and started to advance toward their boarder. South Germany quickly allied with North Germany to prevent the French from entering their states. The German army quickly surrounded the French, leading to a surrender. The German Empire was proclaimed in the Hall of Mirrors at the Versailles palace in France.
