Vseslav as a descendant of Rurik's branch that ruled Polotsk (Great-Grandson of Vladimir the Great)
He was the Prince of Polotsk (Balkans). He was loyal to Kiev, but began raiding neighboring principalities. In 1067 he took Novgorod and Iziaslav came to war against him. Vseslav was tricked into peace talks, where Iziaslav then imprisoned him.
14mos. later, a southern Tartar tribe (Polovtsain) attacked. Iziaslav lost an important battle. The masses demanded weapons for defense and the release of Vseslav (whom they felt was a great general). When Iziaslav refused, there was a mass uprising. Iziaslav fled, and Vseslav was put on the throne.
When Iziaslav I returned with an army of Poles, Vseslav lead his army out. During the night before the battle he fled in secrete.
He retook Polotsk in 1071 and ruled until his death in 1101. He was involved with warring struggles with Iziaslav's family for the rest of his life.
