Sicilian Expedition (1 ene 415 año aC – 1 mar 413 año aC)

Descripción:

An attempt to expand the Delian League, through invading the island of Sicily. The Expedition consisted of what Thucydides described as "the most expensive and glorious armament coming from a single polis [...] up to that time", composed of 139 ships, 5100 hoplites, 900 light-armed troops, and 30 cavalry. Alcibiades' removal from command affected the expedition as the remaining commanders Nicias and Lamachies grew indecisive. Despite receiving reinforcements, they were unable to overpower the Sicilians, who had allied with Sparta. Athens was made to surrender in 404 BCE after prolonging the war for another nine years.
