Olaudah Equiano (1 ene 1745 año – 1 ene 1797 año)
Descripción:
Olaudah Equiano who was captured as a slave in Benin at the age of 10 and worked in the West Indies, Virginia, and Pennsylvania before buying his freedom published an autobiography detailing his life as a slave and as a freeman. His book became a best seller and he traveled through the British Isles giving speeches denouncing slavery and strengthening the anti-slavery movement in England. Slavery also had economic costs. Slave labour was not cheap because plantations had to finance expensive military forces out of fear of slave revolts and slaves worked unenthusiastically. A rapid expansion in Caribbean sugar production led to declining prices which in turn led to a sharp increase in the price for fresh slaves. Europeans also began to shift their attention to industrial manufacturing since wage labour in factories became less expensive than slave labour, and wage workers were able to stimulate the economy by acting as consumers. Britian abolished the trade in slaves in 1807 and slavery was abolished in many countries in the 19th century.
