Great Zimbabwe began to arise near Nyanda, and served as the capital of the kingdom of Zimbabwe. Kings controlled and taxed trade between the interior and coastal regions. Their control of the flow of ivory, gold, and slaves enabled them to forge alliances with local rulers and then profit from commercial transactions.
