D. Luís was the younger brother of D. Pedro V and reigned from 1861 to 1889.
The exploration of territories in the interior of the African continent began during the reign of D. Luís.
Major Alexandre de Serpa Pinto, Hermenegildo Brito Capelo and Roberto Ivens were sent to explore the southern African interior.
They went from Moçâmedes, passing through Huíla, the Cubango and Zambezi rivers, in the African interior, to Quelimane, in Mozambique.
Travels exploring the African interior revealed cultures, habits and customs, fauna and flora that were not known to exist.
