One of the most significant outcomes of the council was the definition of papal infallibility, which states that the Pope is preserved from the possibility of error when the proclaims a doctrine of faith or morals. The council was adjourned abruptly due to the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War and the subsequent capture of Rome.
