The Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition (1478 - 1834) (1 ene 1478 año – 1 ene 1530 año)

Descripción:

1478 - 1834 AD: The Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition, commonly known as the Spanish Inquisition, was established in 1478 by the Catholic Monarchs, King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile, to maintain Catholic orthodoxy and replace the Medieval Inquisition under papal control. It became the most significant manifestation of the Catholic Inquisition, extending to Spain and its colonies, including the Canary Islands, Naples, and Spanish territories in the Americas. Over three centuries, approximately 150,000 people were prosecuted, with 3,000 to 5,000 executed. The Inquisition targeted heretics, particularly converted Jews and Muslims, following decrees in 1492 and 1502 that forced conversions or expulsions. The institution was abolished in 1834 during Isabella II's reign.
