Isabella claimed the Castilian throne in 1474, sparking a war of succession that ended in 1479, the same year Ferdinand inherited the Aragonese throne. Their union united the crowns of Castile and Aragon under the Trastámara dynasty, creating a strong, centralized monarchy. They conquered the Nasrid kingdom of Granada, the kingdom of Navarre, the Canary Islands, and parts of North Africa, uniting most of present-day Spain under one crown while maintaining separate sovereignties.
