Causes:
1. Mussolini was able to gain a large following by characterising himself as an alluring personality in Switzerland.
2. Later when he returned to Italy, he was an editor for the socialist magazine “Ananti!” and gained a larger following in his home country.
3. Mid-way through WW1, instead if criticizing the efforts for war to his followers, he began to advocate for war and encouraging others to feel the same.
4. In 1922 Mussolini and other fascist leaders organised a march on Rome with the intention of overthrowing the government and having the king yield the government to Mussolini. As a result, he was appointed Prime Minister that year.
Effects:
1. Mussolini then dismantled the democratic system and institutions of Italy by 1925 and became dictator. Taking the title Il Duce.
2. For the majority of Italians, this new oppressive fascist regime brought economic hardship and loss of basic human rights.
3. For smaller amounts of higher class people, Mussolini’s new regime brought stability, well-being and what was presented to be national honour, which was actually war and invasion.
4. The regular police force was obliged to join with the OVRA secret police and were entrusted with the task of population control and taking out political opposition.
5. The education system of Italy was invested in heavily by the government. Mussolini’s hope was to develop future generations of fascists. This was done with fascist ideology pushed in curriculum.
6. The rights of women were decreased, and this saw women going back to more traditional roles like being housewives.
7. Mussolini’s overall impact on Italy was throughout all systems. Including the political system, he banned all other political parties, and also reduced personal liberties. Forming a dictatorship
8. Mussolini created fascism by using outlets and tactics that would inspire other dictators in the future, whilst also, spreading the corrupt type of government.
