Causes:
1. Germany was afraid to focus on their goals because they had the fear that the Soviet would attack.
2. Hitler desired a nonaggression pact with the Soviet Union in order for his armies to invade Poland effectively unobstructed by a major power.

Effects:
1. The agreement permitted Nazi Germany to avoid conflict on two fronts a while.
2. It gave the Soviet Union on opportunity of time to mend and strengthen its militaries.
3. It gave Germany exactly what Hitler had desired, which was unrestricted rein to attack Poland.
4. The two nations decided that they would not attack one another and in secret divided the countries that laid between the two of them.
5. Germany claimed Western Poland and a part of Lithuania.
6. Caused further private agreements like, not to provide assistance to a third country that attacked either of them, will not contribute with additional nations in an arrangement that would affect the other.
7. The non-aggression contract was to last for ten years. It was said it could be automatically renewed for a further five years if neither party moved to end it. However Hitler regarded the German-Soviet non-aggression deal as a strategic and momentary plan. Hitler not once envisioned to maintain the terms of the arrangement for ten years. His long-term strategy was for German services to attack the Soviet Union and found Lebensraum for the Germans in the lands they had detained.
8. In July 1940, not only one month after Germany overpowered France, Hitler ordered measures for war against the Soviet Union.
