Weimar Republic (9 nov 1918 año – 23 mar 1933 año)
Descripción:
Causes:
1. The defeat of Germany in World War One. After the Germans lost world war one the country had no leadership.
2. Kaiser Wilhelm II, who had led Germany into the first world war had abdicated and fled to the Netherlands.
3. This abdication gave an opening to more democratic orientated parties to convey an alteration in Germany government.
4. A democratic constitution with a federal structure was formed. The chosen political system was called proportional representation, which means that no state within Germany could be represented by one winner who’d take it all.
5. One of the aims of the constitution was to avoid future political extremism taking power. These were the days where both communism and extreme nationalism were taking root all across Europe.
6. The new Weimar republic was in particular supported by the winners of World War One (England, France, USA) who had political interest to keep German extremist forces at bay.
Effects:
1. Initially the economy improved dramatically by 1929 Germany was producing 33 per cent more than before the war and had established the reputation as the highest producing industrial nation in Europe.
2. Causing unemployment numbers to drop significantly.
3. As a result for most people immediate poverty was reduced.
4. The economic progress created more confidence in the new democratic institutes.
5. Extremist parties like Communist and Nazis initially did not do well in the elections.
6. However, hyperinflation eventually undid much of the economic progress and many people fell back into poverty, this was one of the main contributors to the rise of Nazism in Germany.
