often nonsensical and obscure, dadaism attempted to critique social values with shock value.

this piece was 'designed' in 1915 in america, and was one of the earliest works in the dadaist movement.

duchamp, through his snow shovel, challenged those who believed art should showcase its creator's talent. it was hung from the ceiling in his gallery where other like-minded 'artists' could view it.

he called his artwork a 'readymade'-- he did not even make it himself. it is a purchased snow shovel made of galvanised iron with a wooden handle.

duchamp's shovel critiqued traditionalists who saw art as a thing of beauty and little else. with this piece, he suggested art can be functional, too, which was also a main principal of bauhaus.

this snow shovel on a wire has influenced many modern, abstract 'artists' with its obscurity.
