art nouveau (1 ene 1880 año – 1 ene 1910 año)

Descripción:

involved floral decoration and influences from nature.

environmental design (2nd image) -
'ernst ludwig haus, darmstadt' by joseph maria olbrich, an austrian architect.

art nouveau emerged in multiple places of europe at around the same time. this architectural design was made in darmstadt, germany in 1900.

the intended audience was the grand duke ernest louis and others who followed the kunstlerkolonie. the design is a building used as a communal workshop for the artists in the colony.

ernst ludwig haus consists of stone foundations, two large stone statues and the centrepiece-- gold-plated floral imagery adorning the entrance.

at the time, germany was divided into two factions, one of which was a capitalist, authoritarian group and the other who called themselves the 'grűnderzeit.' the latter were far more interested in arts and beauty than money, thus inspiring them to create ornamental artworks and designs.

the art nouveau movement stemmed from mainly the arts and crafts movement but emphasised decoration even further. ernst ludwig haus' expensive embellishments showed the differences between art nouveau and its predecessor-- while arts and crafts were preoccupied with the crafting process and handmade qualities, nouveau was more interested in appearance alone. while ernst ludwig haus is a functional design, it is one of the few nouveau-era architectural designs to really consider function as much as appearance.

aside from the unique golden decoration, the building's exterior is simple and rectangular to emphasise its functionality which potentially influenced later movements such as bauhaus.
