2000s: The 2000s saw a significant increase in funding and technology for incarceration
and deportation of undocumented immigrants. From 2004 to 2008, ICE funds increased by 30 times, significant the heightened focus on immigration enforcement. In 2006, the creation of the Criminal Alien Program aimed to identify undocumented immigrants in prisons and kills for deportation. This also expended ICE’s presence in these facilities. In 2008, the Secure Communities Program streamlined collaboration between local law enforcement and ICE by checking immigration databases even for minor offenses.
