Athaliah was the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel of Israel, and she married King Jehoram of Judah, which was a political alliance between the two kingdoms. Following the death of her husband Jehoram and her son Ahaziah, who was killed during a state visit to Israel, Athaliah seized the throne of Judah. She eliminated all possible royal heirs to secure her position. Athaliah's reign was challenged by the high priest Jehoiada, who had secretly hidden her grandson Jehoash. After six years, Jehoiada orchestrated a coup, crowning Jehoash as the legitimate king.
