Descripción:
- Soviet-controlled Eastern Europe was supposed to have free elections
- Land in Eastern Europe moved West (USSR took more land)
- The Soviet Army was in all of Eastern Europe so there were no free elections and all were communist governments
- Baltics, Ukraine, Belarus, etc. all not independent
- USSR wants communist buffers (all puppets against Western expansion)
- USSR was trying to help communism all around the world: communist movements spread to Italy, Turkey, Iran, China, Southeast Asia, etc.
- "Iron Curtain" (coined by Churchill): descended on Eastern Europe
- Freedom, democracy, blocked off, secretive, shut down, people locked in, you can't see in or get in
- Iron Curtain is immovable + impossible to remove
