Rewarding Loyalty:

Anglo-Saxons:
-William wanted to trouble free takeover.
-Important earls such as Edwin and Morcar were allowed to keep their earldoms.
-Important church leaders such as Stigand kept their positions.
-Edwin was promised to marry William's daughter.
-Anyone who had fought against William at Hastings lost their land.

Normans:
-Rich gifts were sent to the pope and supporters in Normandy.
-Geld tax was set to allow William to pay for mercenaries.
-Land from the Godwinson family was given to close family and friends. Odo was given Kent and became the second richest man in England, Gospatric was Earl of north Northumbria.

Marcher Earldoms:
Earldoms established along the England-Wales border.
-Smaller
Meant they were easier to control and ensured they earls couldn't become as powerful as the king.
-Earls Granted Privileges
The earls were given rights usually only the king had which meant that they were great rewards for people who helped the invasions.
-Granted Full Power of the Law
The earls became the central law enforcers in the earldom so could respond quickly and effectively to rebellion.
-Exempted from Tax
This was a reward for earls loyalty and encouraged them to spend money on defences.
-Rights to Build Castles
The rest of England had to apply to build castles but the marcher earls could build without permission. This meant they could have many bases for attacks and aided control.

Castles:
Motte and Bailey castles consisted of a bailey surrounded by a palisade and a ditch filled with water which kept the garrison of troops and stables. The motte was a large mound of earth with a keep at the top which acted as a look-out post. Many houses were destroyed to mkae way for the building of castles which meant they were hated by the Anglo-Saxons.

Importance:
-Built in strategic positions to establish control.
-Used as a base for attacks so could dominate territory.
-Were a symbol of Norman power.

Differences to burhs:
-Were for the private use of lords and their garrisons.
-Were smaller and easier to defend.
-Were difficult to attack or set fire to due to protection from earth-works.
-Used to control Anglo-Saxons
