This war began when North Korea invaded South Korea and the North seemed to dominate the South for a long time, until the United States came to the aid of South Korea and China as well as the Soviet Union came in and aided, mostly financially. This also was affected by the rivalry between the Soviet Union and the United states as a result of the Cold War and was part of the reason that the country was so divided. The fighting part of the war lasted three years and the total death toll is put somewhere around 1.2 million. The fighting ended when an armistice was signed that created a demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, but not peace treaty has been signed to this day.
